    One thing that has helped me a lot is to alternate between "productive" projects and organizational ones. So one day I will be building thread racks for my wife's quilting machine, the next I will be adding drawers to the weird space under the spindle sander. This helps me stay focused on organization but not so much it overwhelms or drives me nuts. I just pick one thing to do next. It also help prioritize my scrap, because I can plan to use the remnants of one project in the next and consume them instead of storing them for all time.

    I saw a video of how strong miter cuts versus straight cuts and it's all about the mass of wood and the surface area. This guy glued mitered cuts and they outperformed straight cuts. Why? Surface area. So I'm never fearful of the joint so as long as it has some sort of permanent pin. And that's when I saw a packaging board that had one corrugated fastener after the joint was glued. I tried to break it and the rest of the wood failed first.

    While I do thoroughly enjoy most of your videos, it was refreshing to see a nicely executed furniture design. The added elements, like the sail designs in between the leg pieces, really helped to elevate the piece… no pun intended.

    I like "butt-rabbet" joints for making boxes. It's too much easier and faster than miters and aesthetically it gives almost the same result.

    I just started working on a dining table project and I'm thinking about maple plywood as the top. I'm testing out various stains to see what I like best. I have collected lots of stains on markdown over the last two years. I can confidently say this, HomeDepots products are terrible Behr paint doesn't hold up, Varethane stains are very weak, and Varathane finishes don't protect very well at all.

    As an elder woodworker, being eighty seven, I have used many joining methods in my lifetime. All have their place. As a youngster, I was taught how to make mortise and tenon and dovetails by hand. This was before the advent of power tools to make life easier. Today, I use power tools to accomplish what I did by hand. It saves time and money, which is important if you are making a living from wood. For me pocket screws work for cabinet carcasses and, at a pinch, face frames. Would I stop making dovetails and mortise and tenons and buy a domino machine?, no. But they have their place as well, just not in my shop.

  • @ja-no6fx

    i was gonna let this go, but since u said it over and over again; Here is the definition of Mechanical Advantage: "Mechanical advantage is a measure of the force amplification achieved by using a tool, mechanical device or machine system." Force Amplification. A dovetail joint does not amplify force, therefore a dovetail joint has no mechanical advantage.

    I'd use a mortising attachment for a drill press long before plunge cutting with a router. To each his own, I just have my preference. Lately for myself it's been all chisel work following an oscillating cutter, so there's that option too.

    ive only seen a handful of woodworking videos and i am incredibly skeptical you bought an entire trees worth of slabs just for one piece. when a slab is usually 3-5k from what ive seen and that desk wasn't even that large... what the hell? why lie over something so mundane...

    • @ScottWalshWoodworking
      @ScottWalshWoodworking 4 дні тому

      Slabs come in many different sizes. A $3-5k slab would be ginormous. These were max 24" wide at $8 bdft. 5 slabs costed me around $1,700 iirc.

      @@Jw12077 If you've only seen a "handful of woodworking videos", then I'm assuming you're a beginner woodworker. Why are you telling a more experienced woodworker they're lying if you don't understand what they're saying? I used the whole boule: five 10/4 walnut slabs that made up the entire tree trunk that ranged from 16"-24" wide not counting the sap wood. I suggest dropping the attitude if you ever want to learn something... aka progress in life.

    " She's a beaut, Clark"! Very nice design. The execution was great as well. A complex build and design will often throw up a difficult umber of things to plan and account for in the process and when you are in building and making mode steps can often get missed or not thought of at the time. It happens so don't sweat it. It turned out great.
